David Bailey.
David Bailey is considered one of the best photographers. He worked for many different studios and eventually became a fashion photographer for vogue. Something that made his work stand out to me was the structure of the images. The light and shadows have been enhanced on many of his images making the face more defined. Hair has been though through thorroughly because the models all have huge hair.
The emotion in this image is what caught my eye. I like the expression on the models face and how it corresponds with the make up. The anger in the eyes is exaggerated with the dark eyeliner and the shading on the face on both sides has made the face narrower and more precise. The triangular lines on the face makes sharp and precise angles on the face and this works with the hair to create a tense mood. The left side of the face looks like its cheek is sticking out a little and the shading stops at a black line just above the jaw. I think that this, along with the other black lines and the spiky hair creates a sharp and precise photograph. The eyes have been coloured black all around which draws a lot of attention to it.

My inspiration from this photoshoot came from David Baileys photos because of the overdone hair and shadows. I focused on one image mainly and decided to split the face using black lines. I wanted to create a distressed looking image by having the untidy hair and broken face combination. Throughout the photo-shoot I added more make up and changed the hair to experiment with different styles. I also shaded certain parts of the face to create different dimensions because this is how I wanted to incorporate distortion into the images. I hades the cheekbone on one side to make it look very high and precise and then also shaded another box at the bottom of the face to pretend shadows were there. What didn't work with this was that the lighting was in a difficult position making it not look like a real a shadow. Because of this I want to do another photoshoot but make it seem like the shadows are really being created by the light source. I also coloured in a whole black square and a cracked line because I felt as if this would give the impression they were pissing pieces of the face which looked quite effective.

The aim of this photoshoot was to have the same theme as the previous one of a broken face but I wanted the shadows on the face to all be going in the same direction. This way it can be inferred that the lighting was placed in one position and that the face has multiple crvacies. I think that this photoshoot went well and I like the outcome of the images because they show a contrast between the models face which looks light and the makeup and hair which all looks dark. I think the straight lines allow the images to be looked at from all diferent angles and still be interesting because even from the side the lines act as guides that have created new shapes on the face.
When I was editing the final 4 photos my main goal was to enhance the black lines. I used the burn tool on photoshop to make them darker and then the sharpen tool to make them more precise. I also sharpened alot of the rest of the face and hair because it make the images stand out more.

I then went on to take the same idea as before but do lines blending in a different direction. This is because I thought the shape of the face could be changed by adding lines in different places and casting a shadow over them. This photos turned out very overexposed because of the natural lighting that was used and the white wall background. I made the models hair quite messy and disorganised because I think that the unorganised idea of it all makes it look more disarrayed. Overall I liked the shoot because of the final few images that I decided to use. I editing them using the dodge and burn tool to make some of the lines darker and enhance the shadow as it blends downwards.

My initial idea for these images was to find something that would blend into the background. Therefore I chose to do around the eyes because they would stand out the most. The inspiration behind this shoot originally was from one of David Baileys images and then it turned into a much more extreme look. What I think went well with this look was the lighting of the images as it casts a very distinctive shadow across the face and shapes it nicely. However this also made it very difficult to edit because of the bright highlighted parts on the black face. I think that the shadow under the face also made the images a bit less effective because it would a lot more smooth if the neck was highlighted as well. When I was editing I blacked out the ears and did cover up the neck which makes it appear as if the head is floating. I like how the eyes stand out a lot in the photos as they look really bright and alive.

Richard Avedon.
Richard Avedon was an American portrait and fashion photographer. It was stated that "his fashion and portrait photographs helped define Americas image of style, beauty and culture for the last half-century". I liked the detail in his work as it seems that the hair and makeup played an important role in his work. This particularly made me want to focus on hair as my last experimentation's were focused not he make up of the models.
What drew me to these images was the editorial element that flowed through all of them. I think the composure of the images are important and mostly centred. This particular image has got my attention because of the lighting. I like how the face is washed out by the brightness and the hair is almost in shadow to make it stand out more.
Effort has clearly been put into the make-up and hair of the photos to make the effect more dramatic. What I like about his work is that it seems extreme but the black and white makes it simple. |

Then I decided to do my own photoshoot to experiment with the movement of the hair and to see if this is what creates the look. I chose a model with long hair and i think the different shades of it make the photos more interesting (especially in black and white) then i had another person wave a piece of card to create wind. Then it took a while to find the right angle to make the hair move in the right way but I was pleased with the overall effect because i think it achieved its editorial element by the movement of the hair. Similarly to Richard Avedons work, the hair is the main focus.

I chose my two favourite images based on how effective the hair looks. I like the photo on the left because of the flicks to the side which plays with the composure of the photo making it busier on the left but still without it coming across too strong. When I edited both of the photos I sharpened the hair to make it stand forward and blurred the background to enhance an illusion for depth of field. As the hair is the closest part of the image it looks most reachable.
Herb Ritts.
Herb Ritts gained a reputation as master of the arts and commercial photography. He worked for various magazines such as Vogue and Vanity Fair. He has also won directed music videos that went on to be award winning which shows the vastness of his talent. This work shows the individual emotion of each person and this allows the single photograph to sum up the persons characteristics. The photos I chose were the ones that were all profile because I think it looks more interesting than the other photographers as none of theirs are the same as his. It shows individuality within each person as the photos convey different emotions.

|
When I was taking these photos I was inspired by Herb Ritts because of how his one photo can capture an emotion that portrays the model through the image. I took a few different people and took photos of them as they felt most comfortable hoping that an emotion would take over. Each person has a different outcome as they relaxed into what they felt comfortable doing. I think they successfully embody their own individual personal emotion that I wanted to portray. These all embody their own character and I cropped them to be very close up on the face.

Michael Muller.
is an American photographer known for his celebrity and advertising photos. He has photographed portraits of a wide range of actors, musicians, and artists. He has shot movie posters and promotional photos for many Hollywood movies. What caught my eye was the unsafe and editorial look of his work and how even through black and white the photos still look very alive and busy which is something uncommon in black and white photography. Because of the attitude created in the images by the smoke I decided to experiment with it.
My Michael Muller representation
The idea behind this photo shoot was to create a sense of risk through the act of the model smoking because thats what caught my attention to the photos by Michael Muller. I decided to experiment with smoke in photos because it created a more editorial look. His work looks edgy and dangerous so I wanted to portray the same atmosphere in mine. To accomplish this look I kept the background dark and only lit the face which I enhanced with the dodge and burn tools on photoshop which I thought would made a nice contrast because the background and the subject. Also I think the light and dark bouncing off of each other makes the images come to life compared to if it is all lit. I used a one source light for the photographs because it creates a more harsh light and therefore I think the shadows created by the lighting show a deeper emotion in the photos.
Mark Mawson.
Mark is an international award-winning photographer with 20+ years of experience in capturing a full spectrum of people and places and specialises in shooting people, fashion and still life underwater. I think the symmetry of his photographs is what caught my attention. The new shapes that were created through the use of the reflection were very easy on the eye and they flow nicely as all the lines are soft and curved rather than straight hard edges. It inspired me to combine the work I had done in the style of Michael Muller and make them into something more interesting because of the pretty lines that the smoke created.
my mark mawson Experimentation
Throughout this page there is very minimal editing because my main focus was hair and makeup. However these last few images link to my kaleidoscope work because of the way they have been edited. I think that they show a more editorial style to the kaleidoscope work because of my inspirations such as Micheal Muller and such.
