I want to represent each of the gods by using certain colour schemes that show what they represent. I have researched the gods I wanted to do and learnt what they are known for.
Aphrodite - Is the goddess of love, beauty and desire. She was depicted as a beautiful woman. Her symbols include the rose, shell, pomegranate, and myrtle wreath. Her sacred animal is the dove. For her photo shoots I would prefer a model with long hair and work with the colours pink and white.
Athena - Is the goddess of intelligence and skill, warfare, battle strategy, handicrafts and wisdom. Poets describe her as "grey-eyed" or having especially bright, keen eyes which I will want to manipulate using photo shop. Her symbol is the olive tree so I would prefer my model to be olive toned. She is commonly shown accompanied by her sacred animal, the owl.
Poseidon - He is the god of the sea, droughts, rivers, floods and earthquakes. He is shown with a sturdy beard and strong build. For him I would want to have a male model whose face is clearly dripping with water and the image could be slightly blue.
Zeus - King of the gods, the ruler of Mount Olympus and the god of the sky, weather, thunder, lightning, law, order, and fate. In artwork, he was depicted as a regal, mature man with a sturdy figure and dark beard. His usual attributes are the royal scepter and the lightning bolt, and his sacred animals are the eagle and the bull.
Hades - is the King of the underworld and the dead, and god of the earth's hidden wealth, both agricultural produce and precious metals.. The screech owl was sacred to him.
I want to photoshop the background in some of the photos to make it darker so that he is surrounded by it. Also I want to sharpen the lips and eyes to make them more intense so that you notice the texture on them.

(one source) lighting
butterfly lighting
Butterfly lighting is a glamorous style that sculptures the face and makes the face look more powerful. To achieve it you place the light directly inline with the model taller than them, then position so its shining down at a 45degree angle. It should create a butterfly shape just under the nose and leave the cheeks brightly lit.
Rembrandt
Rembrandt lighting is supposed to flatter the face in a dramatic ad mystical way. One side is lit better than the other. For rembrandt, you put the camera at the same height as butterfly (45degree angle) but instead of the light being in front, you place it 35degrees to the left or right of the model. It should create a triangle of light on the cheek.
split lighting
Split lighting is used to divide the face in half using shadows. The camera has to be directly to the side of the model and the camera at eye level. It can create a dramatic and sometimes sinister look. There should be a dark and light side to the face. If the picture was taken to the side of the models face it would be rim lighting.
rim lighting
Rim lighting has the positioning of split lighting but the photographer stands to the side of the models face so the light looks like its almost outlining the model.
(two source)
clamshell lighting
|
This lighting is similar to butterfly but you position another lighting source underneath the model pointing up at a 45 degree angle. Its used to make the model look glamourous by lighting the whole face and leaving no shadows.
|
River cop lighting
|
River crop has a dramatic effect as it lights both sides of the models ace and leaves a shadow streaking the centre. Its meant to create suspicious and psychotic mood to the mode; because the lighting is unflattering. To create the look you place the two lights on both sides and slightly behind to the model. The further back the lights are, the bigger the shadow.
|
spray lighting
Spray lighting is where you put a light behind the model to brighten up the picture. It also makes the wall less dull and the good thing is that it can be used with any other lighting techniques. The light comes fro behind the model at angle angle facing the background .

Martin shoeller
Martin Shoeller is a photographer based in new york and he has a very recognizable style of portraiture. He takes the same type of photos no matter who he's shooting - celebrity or not. His photos all have similar lighting, backdrop and tone. I like how he captures details in the face by purposely using catch light to highlight the subjects eyes. It ads a glint of emotion and life into his images. I think that the way he takes his photos is very clever because he makes the eyes, eye brows, nose and mouth (also facial hair) very high definition. The rest of the features (neck, ears, hair) seem blurred and it draws your attention to the center of the faces.
I think that this photo by Martin Shoeller is one of my favourites because of the life in the eyes and the contrast between the blue eyes and yellow hair and pink lips.
|
This one is not as bright or textured as the Brad Pitt one but I still like it because of the smoothness in the face and the slick hair. This one more shiny than the other one and also his face is less symmetrical so it still looks good but as if less has been done to make it look 'perfect'.
|
his photo looks less high definition than the others because of the lack of texture in his face (e.g wrinkles). There is less colour in this photo compared to his others and it is overall less bright.
|
|
my martin shoelleri found it hard to re-create Martin Shoellers style but it was most likely because of the lack of equipment I had compared to him. My backgrounds were green which were hard to edit and his were either grey or white. I tried to re-create catchlight in the eyes of the models by placing two lights on either side of me while taking the photo's and having them stare into the camera. Then I used the blur tool to blur everything around the face and the sharpen tool to make the eyes, nose, cheeks, forehead, lips, chin and hair more textured.

jorge miguel
_Jorge Miguel is a photographer from spain. His style of work is unusual
and he works with many different textures on the face. Each picture is
unique to one another and the backgrounds vary in colour. He usually
keeps the background of the photo similar to the colour of the model.
His photo's all seem quite uncomfortable and represent torture. I could
use his work to help me do a photo shoot because he has different
emotions shown through his photos.
I like this photo by Jorge Miguel because it's one of the brightest that he has and it shows a more positive emotion compared to the other ones. I think that this photo of his has helped me the most because it made me choose different colour schemes for my photo shoots because of what the colours represent.
|
This one is very different to the pink photo and looks very lifeless. I think the contrast between the black lips and eyelashes and the white face make the image more interesting.
|
I really liked this photo because (even though the model has make up on) it looks like a lot less effort compared to the others and yet it still looks as successful. This image is more of scale than the others and has a more unpleasant feel to it because of the idea of suffocation and the dark, moody colours.
|
|
Mt jorge miguelWhile representing Jorge Miguel I tried to think of things to do on my model that are simple and still effective. It was fun to re-create but the main thing that made my photos look similar to his was the editing. I used a certain colour for each photo because he hardly has more than 2 colours going on at once. I thought that the model would need to look uncomfortable in the photos as Jorge Miguels usually do. For this photoshoot I used spray lighting which you can see in most of Jorge's photo's. I think it was a good choice has it has brought more shape to the images.

JAMIE NELSON
__Is a New York based fashion and beauty photographer. She gets inspiration from
everything around her- textures, people, sounds and places. Jamie has been working professionally for 6 years and
her work has been published in publications such as Cosmo and Elle. I decided to look at her work because she has a rage of photo shoots that I found could help me recreate the image of a goddess.
For this photo shoot I focused on the geek goddess, Athena. Because she is the goddess of war I concentrated on the colours gold, red and black - the gold represents armor, red to show that she is still feminine and black to show that she's serious as she's a warrior. I used Jamie Nelson as inspiration for this shoot because his photographs show emotion quite well and I wanted my model to look ready for battle. I like his use of colour the angles of the models face.
|
my jamie nelsonI like the metallic colours to show the battle and war side because she is the goddess of war but because she is a god, she would still have to look 'pretty' so chose the pinks and reds to symbolise the feimine side. I want to re-do the Athena shoot with a different model who would suit it better.

claire harrison
Claire is a professional photographer of Fashion, Hair & Beauty, Advertising & Editorial.
The shoots by Claire Harrison gave me idea's of what I could do for Poseidon. It made me consider using water on the models face (I used liquid Glucose as it is allot thicker) and I realized I wanted to take a more subtle approach and concentrate on strong eyes. I tried to stick to only using the color blue to make sure it was clear that it was water.
|
|
my claire harrisonI used some of Claire's photo's where she's worked with water and make-up running down her models faces to help me decide what I wanted to do for Poseidon photo shoot. I used one lighting source which I moved around the model to see what I thought would work best. This shoot has helped me to realize that I would want to take a more subtle approach on Poseidon working with mainly blue around the eyes and also use a model who has blue eyes to bring out the feeling of the ocean more.

the gods.
zeus experimentation
For Zeus' photo shoot I wanted to mainly concentrate on having the face well lit to show that there is no darkness in him. Zeus is the god of all gods and the god of weather and sky so I wanted the pictures to look very airy. I edited them so they were more on the golden side as he is particularly the god of lighting. It was hard to create a very powerful image. I preferred the models face in the center of the camera because it makes him look more in charger of everything. This photoshoot was unsuccessful so I didnt use it.
athena experimentation
I used gold and red colours to show that he's the goddess of war. I don't think this photo shoot worked out the way I wanted it to. I used a different style of lighting half way through the photo shoot to show the darkness. I made the colour of the models skin even more golden to exaggerate the gold which represent battle. This photoshoot was not as successful as I wanted it to be but it helped me to decide what lightig and make-up I wanted to work with for my others.
I want to edit the photos so she has grey eyes because it would make the photo's more intense and she is described as a grey-eyed. I did these experiments of it on photo shop using and I changed the brightness, hue and saturation to make it more of a foggy grey colour. The photo's look better like this because the models eye contact with the camera is more noticeable.

aphrodite experimentation
I wanted these photos to represent love and beauty. I like the tanned colour of her face because it shows the life and almost gives her a glow and the subtle pink not to over do it. I chose my favourite 5. She represents beauty and love and I think I achieved that through the colour scheme and expression on the models face. I used clamshell lighting for this shoot which meant there were barely any shadows on the model's face, making it more venerable and open. Even though I enjoyed this photoshoot I think it could be improved.
I wanted to manipulate Aphrodite's eyes by making them pink because it shows a more loving emotion in the models eyes. I selected the eyes using the quick selection tool and then I clicked 'Layer via copy' to make the eyes separate to the rest. Then I changed the brightness, contrast and saturation to make then lighter and standing out more. I also blurred the skin and used the sharpen tool on the eyes, lips and cheeks to exaggerate the cheeks.

aphrodite
I did another Aphrodite photo shoot because I had a better idea of what I wanted it to look like since my first attempt was not as strong as I hoped.

hades
I like the lighting in these photos and how all the features have been made darker. Because Hades is the god of war I wanted the images to be dark and moody. In the photo's I used split lighting because I wanted to include a lot of shadow. In most of the photo's half the face has actually been replaced with darkness from shadow which I think works really well.
poseidon
For Poseidon's I wanted to show different tones of blue just as the sea would have so I used two different shades around the eyes of my model. Poseidon is commonly known as having a sturdy beard which i think went well. I also splashed water over the models face so there's texture in the image and also to make the images more obvious. I decided to use clamshell lighting for most of the photo's so that the model didn't look to dark.
